Justin Gaethje is the former UFC interim lightweight champion and the former WSOF lightweight champion.
Gaethje next made his World Series of Fighting debut against Dream/Strikeforce veteran Gesias Cavalcante setting a furious pace and defeating Cavalcante via an unfortunate first round doctor stoppage.
Gaethje next fought UFC/MFC veteran Brian Cobb, defeating Cobb via third round technical knockout due to leg kicks. With the win Gaethje earned a spot in the first WSOF lightweight tournament.G
Gaethje then fought Dan Lauzon knocking out the veteran Lauzon in the second round in a very impressive performance.
Gaethje next signed for a rematch with Cavalcante for the inaugaral WSOF lightweight title. Cavalcante was unfortunately quickly injured and replaced by Lewis Gonzalez. Gonzalez was injured and replaced by Richard Patishnock. Gaethje knocked Patishnock out in the first round.
Gaethje next signed in March 2014 to defend his title against the undefeated one-armed fighter Nick Newell. Gaethje inevitably battered Newell en route to a dominant second round knockout victory to successfully defend his title.
Gaethje next signed to defend his title for the second time against UFC veteran Melvin Guillard.

Instead, the fight between Tony Ferguson and Gaethje would be for the interim title, a title Ferguson had held before and been stripped of controversially. Ferguson suffered a broken orbital bone in the loss to Gaethje.
